December 6, 2010 Holiday – Muharram, Islamic New Year

Muharram or the Islamic New Year is first day of the month Muharram that marks the beginning of the new calendar year in Muslim countries. Muhrram is a solemn day, the occasion of mourning. It is observed for remembering the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammad’s son-in-law Ali, and Ali’s elder son Hassan, who was killed in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Muslims celebrate this occasion by congregating in mosques to offer prayers and stay on to listen to readings from the Koran.
