February 2, 2011 Holiday – Candlemas in Luxembourg

Candlemas is a catholic holiday that commemorates the presentation of Christ in the Temple. The holiday also marks the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. At night children sing a traditionsl song wishing health and prosperity to their neighbors and receive sweets and gifts to Luxembourg in return. They also carry special candles called Lichtebengel, symbolizing the coming of spring.
