March 25, 2011 Holiday – Independence Day in Greece

Independence Day in Greece is both a national and religious holiday annually observed on March 25, that commemorates the beginning of the War of Greek Independence in 1821. It also coincides with the Orthodox celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel told Mary that she would give birth to Jesus. On this day Greek attend numerous parades and events held in the streets.
