April 1, 2011 Holiday – St Lazarus Day in Bulgaria

St. Lazarus is a Christian holiday in Bulgaria celebrated each year on the 8th day before Easter on Saturday. Lazarus was a friend of Jesus and his name is a symbol of health and longevity. On this day young bulgarian girls wear traditional costumes decorated with flowers and walk through the village from house to house singing songs and blessing for health, happiness and prosperity. The master of each house is supposed to give them fruits or other small gift. This tradition is still alive among young generation because it is believed that a girl that has not performed this ritual will not marry.
