May 9, 2011 Holiday – Victory Day in Russia

Victory Day is one of the biggest holidays in Russia celebrated each year on May, 9 which commemorates the end of World War II in 1945 in Russia and the former Soviet Countries. On this day military parades are held in almost every city in Russia to honor men who gave their lives for freedom, and celebrate those who brought the victory with them. The festivities culminate in a big firework display held in the evening in the heart of Russia, Red Square in Moscow. There’s also a tradition to give flowers, usually red carnations, to veterans and to lay wreaths at the war memorial sites. Many families gather around a festive table on May,9 to honor surviving witnesses of World War II and remember those who perished.
