July 13, 2011 Holiday – Bon Festival in Japan

Feast of Lanterns more widely known as Bon Festival is an old buddhist observance that has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years. Feast of Lanterns is the day when all dead ancestors visit their relatives. The customs of this 3 days long observance include visiting cemeteries, making special offerings of food at temples and house altars, hanging alight lanterns in the streets or letting them on rivers, performing traditional dance called Bon-Odori.
