September 19, 2011 Holiday – Respect For the Aged Day in Japan

Respect for the Aged Day is a holiday observed in Japan on the third Monday of September since 1966 to honor longevity and pay tribute to the oldest members of the Japanese society. To feature the elderly various ceremonies are held by the government, pupils who make a special keirokai performance with traditional dancing, singing, feasting and gift giving. To mark the occasion many families in Japan also organize a festive dinner.
