March 17, 2013 Holiday – Maslenitsa (Pancake Festival) in Russia

Maslenitsa or Pancake Festival in Russia began as a pagan ritual and has since been absorbed into the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Maslenitsa is similar to Mardi Gras carnival and is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, on the seventh week before Orthodox Easter and this year finishes on March, 17.

Maslenitsa is the time for feasting and celebrating the coming of spring. The symbol and the essential part of the celebration are blini – thin Russian pancakes which symbolize the sun, and are eaten during the whole week with all sorts of fillings including butter, sour cream, honey, jam, mushrooms and even caviar.

In addition to the food, other common activities during Pancake Festival in Russia include bonfires, puppet shows, carnival games and rides, dancing and singing, fireworks, and more.
