April 11, 2013 Holiday – Battle of Rivas in Costa Rica

The Battle of Rivas Day is a national holiday annually observed in Costa Rica on April, 11 and marks the victory of the country over Confederate invaders back in 1856. The Battle of Rivas Day is also known as Juan Santamaria Day called after a national hero of Costa Rica Juan Santamaria. This brave young man born in Alajuela was a drummer boy in the country’s impromptu militia when volunteered to set on fire the troops of William Walker and his Nicaraguan army who were attempting to take over Costa Rica and enslave its citizens. Juan fulfilled his patriotic duty, which cost him his life and gained him martyrdom.

To celebrate the holiday people in Costa Rica hold street fairs with music, dancing, traditional food and  drinks.
